This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.

"John du Prey - Classical Review" 2009-06-17
By Wayne D. Olson (Bloomington, MN)
Romantically speaking, the delicate crescendo of unfinished love dominates this powerful classic (easily one of the finest dramatic musicals ever produced). The unfolding of love, passion, and intimacy between Tony and Maria, like the riptide, spills into the soul of this film. Their whispered and orchestrated words on the balcony create nuances beyond the realm of normal drama. Their marriage before God establishes their union, solidifies the romantic crescendo, and allows Maria to mourn her husband's death at the end. It is a complete tragedy on all respective levels.

All meetings between Tony (played by Richard Beymer) and Maria (played by Natalie Wood) are stunning in presentation. The musical overtures are superb, the dancing is brilliant, and the conflict between the Jets and Sharks (women included) has its own originality in classical terms. Yet, Maria alone commands the stage in virtually all tender moments (except those involving Anita); our heroine's softness, intelligence, and untested wisdom establishes her emotive control of the play (start to finish). In as much as her humility does not detract from the other powerful performances, Maria displays honor, sacrifice, depth, and commitment throughout the entire drama. We observe Natalie Wood in her finest hour as a gifted actress.

The principles of romantic tragedy dominant this play in its careful adherence to the plot and character development within Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (who is Maria's unspoken mentor in matters of passion and control of one's lover). She redirects Tony away from secreted romance into the tragic consequences of interfering with the rumble; the deaths of Bernardo (her brother) and Riff (Tony's closest friend) are related (within dramatic irony) to her secret intervention (supposedly on their behalf). In truth, this masterpiece resides in both categories, tragedy and romance; bound (perhaps) by her mournful voice, "Don't you touch him!" Our catharsis is directly affected by Maria's youthful passion related to unfinished love in its most delicate stages.

 "Felt liked rated R. . . COOL!" 2009-05-29

When my grandma and grampa came out to visit us (my family), daddy found West Side Story just coming on. So we sat to watch it.

It is kinda like modern (not-so modern now) Romeo and Juilet. Only, it includes graffiti, that short guy who wants to be with the good guys, and a few more.

I think I gave West Side Story a four because the use of teens smoking, the good guys leader telling his 'buddys' to bring guns, knives, swords, ect.. I also gave four stars 'cause the ending is kinda sad. My mom started crying and was really, really in your face, like, 'Ohhh, Tony died, shame on Chico.'

P.S. I was eight when I saw this. . . it really should have been rated R (mild violence, language)

"Lovely film.....but is it complete??" 2009-10-04
By Jiten S. Merchant (Bombay, India)
I have the earlier DVD release and am thinking of replacing it with this one, for the following reason:

3 songs are cut from my copy of the film, though they are on the soundtrack CD. They are "My Lord and Master", "I have dreamed" and Anna's soliloquy. Were these filmed and then removed from the final cut of the film? If so, does the 50th anniversary edition of the film provide these songs as "extras"?

I think any "special edition" DVD-release of a film MUST include all material that was later removed by the studio for whatever reason; as included in the latest releases of "South Pacific", "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Bells are Ringing" to name only three. Does this "50th anniversary edition" of "The King and I" do the same?

After countless alterations, a revolving door of writers and directors (which included Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Sidney Lumet, and Garson Kanin), crazed tryouts, and an opening night that was delayed five times, Funny Girl turned out to be an unadulterated smash--and it still sounds great this much further on. Composer Jule Styne, at the peak of his brassy powers, custom-fitted the show to its star, Barbra Streisand, and she ran away with it. Streisand's delivery of "People" still sends a chill down the spine, and she completely radiates with the life-force of someone who's a star and knows it. Funny Girl is a delirious, larger-than-life Broadway epic that projects showstopping energy but never loses track of its characters' humanity. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

"Barbra's triumphant debut on Broadway!" 2009-03-28
By Sylviastel
This original soundtrack is a must for all Barbra Streisand fans. She sings unlike anybody else on stage in any medium. Her voice is probably that of a soprano herself. I was surprised by Jean Stapleton's singing voice about a pretty girls and Atlantic City in reference to the Miss America Pageants which were held there annually until recently. Streisand's performance in singing here as Fanny Brice is wonderful and exceptional. I could still imagine Barbra singing these songs even now. You wonder why they haven't revised this musical on Broadway and it's because of Barbra's unforgettable performance and singing talents in Funny Girl. What Cabaret did for Liza, Funny Girl did for Streisand and that magic can't be remade again like. We'll never see the likes of them again.

"THE MUSIC THAT MAKES ME SUBLIME" 2007-05-04
By DEWEY MEE (ELLENSBURG, WA,)
Now you can hear what is missing from the 1968 film version of "FUNNY GIRL"-- and that's actually quite a lot! Barbra Streisand sings a super "Coronet Man." There's a bit more for supporting players Danny Meehan and Kay Medford to do (they sing a funny "Who Taught Her Everything") because, I assume Streisand had to be off stage sometimes to change costumes. Jean Stapleton of "All In The Family" fame is distinctively heard in "If A Girl Isn't Pretty."

Broadway Cast Albums were recorded live with orchestra; just like the a live Broadway show. In later years, Barbra developed such an obsession with perfection and absolute control. She does not have that luxury here. She just has to do it big time, and boy, does Barbra deliver the goods!! I like the more intimate sound throughout. This is the only version of "People" I like, because Barbra sings it so simply and straightforward. By 1967-1968, Barbra had sung the song so often, she became too stylized. Her version of "Don't Rain On My Parade" here is every bit as thrilling as the movie version. The arrangement in the movie is just bigger and brassiier.

It's a sin that the haunting and superb songs "Why Are You Now?" (where Fanny Brice privately expresses doubts about her relationship with beloved husband Nick Arnstein) and "Music That Makes Me Dance" were omitted from the movie version. These are two of Barbra's most sublime and classic performances. Because they were dropped from the movie, they remain lesser known. Also, Barbra's record label Columbia passed on the original Broadway Cast Album; so Capitol got it. "Music That Makes Me Dance" was dropped from the movie in favor of Fanny Brice's signature torch ballad "My Man." Barbra sings "My Man" at full dynamic, emotional throttle to give the movie a heartbreaking finale, but the movie should have included both songs.

The ending is completely different. Fanny Brice is devastated by the loss of Nick Arnstein, but she's going to survive. Barbra sings a determined, valiant reprise of "Don't Rain On My Parade", belting out, "Let's give 'em hell, Brice. We'll cry a little later. Well, Brice, that's life in the theatre. Nobody, no nobody, is gonna rain on my-- PARADE!!" You go, girl!! I love the movie, but I never listen to the movie soundtrack anymore (although I own it, too). When I want "FUNNY GIRL", I turn to this divine, sublime Broadway Cast Album. If you love Barbra at her best, you've GOT to get this original Broadway Casr Album, too!! 5 Stars. Highest Recommendation!!

 "Classic Streisand Role!" 2006-07-29
By AJK (Chicago, IL)
While not her first show, "Funny Girl" proved to be Barbra Streisand's ticket to immortality. Too bad she lost that year's Best Actress Tony to the equally deserving (?) Carol Channing in "Hello Dolly" ... though she ultimately won the 1968 Oscar for the film version of the classic role.

Composer Jule Styne's terrific score was tailor-made for Ms. Streisand and contains several theatrical standards.

Best tracks include:

I'm The Greatest Star

People

Don't Rain On My Parade

Who Are You Now?

The Music That Makes Me Dance

Yes, there are a few tracks I regularly skip, but, overall the score is terrific!

Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin. Or any of the principals, for that matter--and the differences are remarkable. --Bill Holdship

I wore out the vinyl on this album when I had it as a child. I can sing along with every word, know every nuance. I loved the big numbers, Consider Yourself, Oom Pa Pa, etc. And now as I listen as an adult, I am enjoying rest of the pieces.

I can't (and honestly, don't want) to separate the quality of the music from the childhood enjoyment, so for me it is 5 stars.

The additional material is fun, and since the original has worn a permanent groove in my brain, it's interesting to hear different takes on the material.

"Oliver!" is not a musical to be analyzed song-by-song or voice-by-voice. It is a musical to be enjoyed as a whole. While a couple of the songs did enjoy some popular success, there is really no stand-out among them; and none of the voices is out of the ordinary.

However, every song either propels the plot or reveals character traits. And every voice portrays the person it represents.

So--Sit back, close your eyes, relax, visualize the version of "Oliver!" you have seen (either the movie or on stage), and relive your theater experience. You will not be sorry.

"Guaranteed Success and Maybe World Peace!" 2009-10-01
By Trevor J. Flannigan
The book this week is the best book I have read in a very long time! It was How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It genius in every aspect. If everyone on the planet reads this book and puts it into practice, we might just have world peace. Carnegie's words of wisdom are priceless, it was first published in 1934 and has been in print ever since!

The book is broken into four section and each section has between 3 to 12 lessons. I wish I could just publish the whole book in this blog, but I don't have enough room... instead I will choose a few lessons in each section and explain how they can be applied to your daily life.

Section 1 Techniques in Handling People

"Don't Criticize, Condemn, or Complain"- From time to time everyone get frustrated because of what someone else does... It might be at work, at home, or even driving (I sometimes get a bad case of road-rage). Carnegie has several stories about President Lincoln's life and one I particularly liked related to this lesson is about General Meade during the the Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln gave orders to Meade to take immediate action against Lee's beaten and trapped army when they reached the Potomac. Meade did the exact opposite of Lincoln's orders and called council during war which gave enough time for Lee's army to escape. Lincoln was furious! If Meade had obeyed his order's the war would have been over right then and the course of history would have been changed forever! Lincoln was a conservative man in all aspects of his life. He wrote Meade a letter condemning his actions... He laid out all his distresses. However, Meade never got this letter, it wasn't found until after Lincoln was assassinated. Lincoln probably just put himself in Meade's shoes.. If he had just been through weeks of war, surrounded by blood and bullets of fallen comrades he wouldn't be rushing into another battle so abruptly. Sometimes you just have to consider the other person's perspective and it may give you world's of incite into why they acted the way they did and in Lincoln's case, maybe encourage you to reserve your complaint.

"Give Honest and Sincere Appreciation"- Give everyone the appreciation they deserve. Self-esteem is a great way to win someone's approval and friendship. Now, the mistake that is commonly made is giving flattery. Flattery is counterfeit, it's fake. If someone isn't something worth praising then don't say it. It will cause more harm then good. When you are a woman or man of your word you must make sure everything that comes out of your mouth is honest. If you stray from the truth then you will have a difficult time getting trust back from those around you.

Section 2 Making People Like You

"Remember Names"- Carnegie writes that "a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language" and it's very true. When I see someone I haven't seen in a long time and they come out and say "Hi Trevor, How are you?" they have almost won me right from the start. Just saying someone's name to them makes them happy. I try and make it a habit to remember people's name, especially people that provide a service: the guy I buy my suits from or all the people at the front desk of my apartment. I instantly see a difference in the service I get when I call them by name. You build a connection with people and it makes them happy. And if nothing else you should be trying to make other people happy- so give it a shot call people by name, and if you are introduced to someone try your best to remember their name... this is one huge key to building a great network.

"Smile"- It is a tough thing to do, but smiling will make you feel better and happier and it will make those around you happy too. Now don't do a crazy smile all day and scare people. Make an effort to produce a sincere smile and wear it proudly. It is a fantastic way to get through the day. When you meet people and you show some teeth, you will build and instant connection with that person because subconsciously you have made that person happier and when you make someone happy they want to be around you more. I actually have my latest fortune from my last Chinese meal taped above my desk, it reads: "Smile often, and see what happens."

Section 3 Win People to Your Way of Thinking

"Avoid Arguments"- This is absolutely number one. Carnegie makes a great point when he writes that "No one can ever win from an arguement." Even if you are the one that comes up with the most facts and crushes your opponent into seeing "your side." You have ultimately pushed that person farther away from you because you tore down their self-esteem. And as I said previously boosting self-esteem is a great way to win someone's approval and friendship, but tearing it down has the exact opposite affect 10-fold. Do everything in your power to avoid the argument. Use the following words as a template "I understand your point of view, I didn't look at it from that perspective. I got my facts from ________ and you got yours from ________. Please help me understand your side so we can resolve this." It is hard to think that clearly when you are in the heat of a debate, but just try and think. If you concede and hear the other person's side, you will ultimately bring that person closer and build a better relationship.

"Get them Saying Yes, Yes"- I am sure all of us have had our run in with a door to door salesperson or any salesperson for that matter. One concept they understand is this lesson and you probably don't even recognize they are doing it either. The idea of this lesson is getting someone to be in affirmative mood. If you ask somewhat obvious questions from the start, that have the answers "yes," that person is subconsciously more likely to say yes to what is coming next. So when you talk to the salesperson at the car dealership and they say "You have had a drink in your car, right?" and you say "yes," and then they say "You like to have your drinks cold when you drink them, right?" and you say "yes" again. You are much more likely to say "yes" when that salesperson says "Well you should probably get the Cooling/Heating Cupholders shouldn't you?"

Section 4 Be A Leader

"Let the Other Person Always Save Face"- This is very important for leaders. It is easy to try and "set an example" when you are in a leadership role by reprimanding someone in front of everybody. The result will be pushing this person farther away from you and you'll lose trust and they will be less likely to work hard for you in the future. So always let a person save face. When someone does something "wrong" just make sure you take them aside to discuss the situation. No body likes to be "called out" in front of their peers. It hurts their self-esteem and we all know how important that is! Now I should note that Carnegie doesn't use this approach just toward an employee/employer situation, this can be applied to all relationships. Parents can grow closer and build better relationships with their children, friends with other friends, on so on and so forth, all by using the methods laid out in this book.

"Give Reputations to Live up to"- If someone is told they are good at something in front of their peers, they will do even better at it. So if you tell one of your friends in front of everybody that "so and so" is the best goalie you have ever seen. That will encourage that person to do even better. You have set up a good reputation to live up to and that person will most likely put in the effort, work extra hard, and really become the best goalie they possibly can become. This is a situation where it is okay to single someone out in front of their peers. It acts as a boost and that person will even grow to like you more for singling them out in a positive way.

That is all I am going to write about this book. I wish I could do more, but it's getting to be pretty long already. However, I want to reiterate that the lessons in this book are priceless and timeless. I will encourage each and every one of you to go buy this book. Carnegie is a great writer and I think you will find the book very fascinating. (I did!) And just to show you how important I feel the lessons of this book are I added a picture of my whiteboard. I wrote up every lesson from the book and I review them before I leave my apartment every morning. If you have any questions on the book don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help anyone that wants it.

Thought the point of me buying a kindle was so that I don't have to buy hard books and have them all stored in my Kindle. This is irritating.
